I have now spent over a month trying to install DNS 15 upgrade on my laptop computer.
Initially I dealt with Nuance technical support for the installation procedures.
I was told initially that I would have to install all of the Dragon NaturallySpeaking programs going back to version 11 because I had purchased upgrades. It was apparently not enough to supply the passwords, but I actually had to install the product.
Then after calling Nuance technical support and agent said he would get me a standalone password for DNS 15 so that I could avoid installing earlier versions.
In an later email response I was told that I would have to install Dragon version 13 using its serial number and then install DNS 15.
I gave up on Nuance for installation at this point and turned to Knowbrainer and Lunis who told me how to install DNS 15 without all this nonsense. It worked as he explained and on registration I had to supply my Dragon 13 password as well as my new DNS 15 password. That seemed foolproof from Nuance's point of view so why there multitude of advice about having to install earlier versions? It seems that Nuance likes to punish loyal customers who continue to buy extravagantly priced updates.
Unfortunately, my misery did not end there. After successfully installing DNS 15 I let the software upgrade the user profile it found and in doing that it crashed. Now I couldn't even open DNS 15. If I tried, with task manager open, I saw NatSpeak.exe appear briefly as a process and then disappear. I repaired the software and tried again, but the same thing happened.
So I called technical support and got someone surprisingly knowledgeable, given my past experience, had me remove user profiles to the desktop and try opening DNS 15 again It didn't work.
Then I got a subsequent email to make further changes to the registry deleting certain keys. I tried that and DNS 15 would still not open.
This is a stage I find myself at now; waiting for additional responses from Nuance.
If you ever want to explain to someone what a nightmare is then the answer is: dealing with Nuance technical support.
As an aside I note that I could not dictate this software using my workstation DNS 15 software because it apparently doesn't work with the Nuance website. So I had to dictate into notepad and cut-and-paste.
DNS 15 is a useful product when it works and given my physical limitations it is essential to me. I wish that were not so.
